Reasons Not to Go Green
Top 5 Reasons Not to Go Green
5. People are too busy to go green
Most of us have a 9 to 16-hour (poor you) work day including commute. Most of us also sleeps 6 to 8 hours a night. So, that leaves us 9 hours (doubtful, but mathematically makes sense) to 0 hours a day to take care of our daily errands from grocery shopping, taking care of your kids, your bills and all that good stuff. After you are done with all that it is understandable that all you want to do is relax and chill with your family. Digging into an Eco-friendly and sustainable living habit is most likely not part of the life of an ordinary person. In fact, the reasons to go green may never come across people's mind at all.
4. Living Green is Expensive!
The Eco-Friendly alternative of a mainstream product unfortunately does tend to cost a little more. For example, a box of 13-gallon, 110 counts plastic trash bags cost around $18, while the biodegradable version cost $38! It is true that the cost of manufacturing Eco-Friendly alternatives is still higher than the mainstream mass produced products, simply because the supply is not high enough at the moment which is caused by a low demand (comparatively speaking) for Eco-friendly products to begin with. (Economics 101: when the downward impact of the supply for a certain product is more than the downward impact of the demand, price will increase and quantity produced will decrease). Cost is always a big factor in the modern society unfortunately, hence it is also a huge reason not to go green.
3. There is an opposing side to everything, even on going green!
While we think promoting living green is such a positive and unselfish idea, there is a surprising number of people against it. The existence of this group of people has a significant impact to sway the mainstream consumers to stay away from the green products and a sustainable living habit. In fact, they are already promoting tons of absurd reasons not to go green For folks who do not really care about the environment, whether or not they believe in global warming, whether or not climate change is a hoax, if there is a tiny chance that we are destroying the planet for our future generation, why do we want to take the risk?
2. People are brainwashed with mainstream consumer goods
When you walk into a Walmart, literally 99% of the products have some sort of plastic in it, whether it is the material or the packaging. When you walk into a Macy's, 90% of the clothing, jewelries, and accessories are not sustainably manufactured. In fact, the fashion industry is one of the most polluting industries in the world! It is not fair to say that most consumers do not care about the environment, but they simply do not get to see or understand the horrific impact behind the scene of these products.
1. People do not think their individual actions will make an impact!
It is ridiculous to tell someone that if he or she stops buying plastic bottled water, all of the dolphins in the ocean will be thankful to them. For a mainstream consumer, cost and convenience always come first. When people who lack environmental awareness become completely accustomed to their daily habits, they will easily give you numerous reasons why not to go green because of all kinds of changes they have to make. That is why it is hard for them to see the big picture that if the demand of plastic bottled water decreases enough, the Eco-Friendly alternatives will become the mainstream and the price of those products will go down eventually! And when living green becomes the new mainstream lifestyle, we will absolutely have a better home!
